A five-minute visual check can reveal belt, pulley or tensioner problems before they become roadside problems. Use this checklist with the engine off, the key removed and the engine cool.
Before inspecting
- Confirm the truck year, engine and whether it has a single or dual alternator.
- Photograph the belt routing before removing anything.
- Never reach into the drive system while the engine is running.
Inspect the belt
- Ribs: Look for missing sections, chunking, splitting or material separating from the belt.
- Edges: Check for fraying, exposed tensile cords or one edge wearing faster than the other.
- Back surface: Look for glazing, cracking, heat damage or polished areas caused by slipping.
- Contamination: Oil, coolant, fuel or other fluid can damage belt material and reduce grip. Find and repair the leak before installing another belt.
- Tracking: The belt should sit squarely in every grooved pulley with no rib hanging over an edge.
Inspect the complete drive system
- With the belt removed, rotate accessible pulleys by hand and check for roughness, binding or side-to-side movement.
- Inspect the tensioner and idlers for looseness, damage or misalignment.
- Do not assume recurring belt noise is “just the belt.” Chirping, squealing or repeated edge wear can indicate a pulley, tensioner, alignment or contamination problem.
- Replace damaged related components before installing the new belt.
Verify fitment before ordering
Year and engine alone may not identify the correct belt. Alternator configuration, special equipment and mid-year changes can alter belt length or routing.
